Are you going through a difficult illness and
wishing you could cope better with the enormous stress of the illness,
the treatment, and all of the complications it has caused in your life?
Or perhaps you are in reasonably good health and would like to make
some serious lifestyle changes in order to remain healthy.
My health counseling:
-
Helps those who are going
through cancer
treatment lessen side effects
substantially, and cope with the stress caused by both the illness and
the treatment.
-
Teaches
relaxation skills:
simple, easy to learn techniques which will have a profound effect on
your ability to handle the small and big stresses of life.
-
Helps you create a
healthy lifestyle:
with food, exercise, and again, stress reduction techniques.
-
Gives you powerful tools to use before
and after surgery to stay calm;
lessen pain; and reduce recovery time substantially.
-
Guides you in putting together a
holistic health team to help you with
your health issues. Found out what alternative therapies would work for
you, and how to choose a practitioner.
-
Incorporates
Reiki
treatments as appropriate.
Illness is information. It tells us our body, our emotions, and/or our
spirit is out of balance and in need of attention. Illness is an opportunity
to reflect on where we are in our lives, how we are living,
and how we would like to be living. If you are in good health, yet feeling
the effects of chronic stress in your life, you are also getting a message to
stop and look at how you are living.
My approach to health counseling is both holistic and individualized.
I will guide you in understanding your health issues in the context
of your whole life. When we compartmentalize our health problems, we
overlook the basic fact that everything is interconnected. Our emotions,
the environments in which we live and work, relationships, nutrition,
spirituality, and physical activity all play a role in our health and
well being. Conversely, when we are ill, stressed to our limit, depressed,
anxious, or simply low in energy, this affects each and every aspect
of our life.
With each client, I design an individualized program addressing that
persons health issues. The basic goal, however, is the same: to
assist you in understanding your health in the context of your whole
life, and then moving towards empowering you to create a healthy life.
Part of the work I will be doing with you involves counseling; part
of it is educational; and part is coaching. What I do not do
is psychotherapy. I only work with clients who are in reasonably good
health emotionally, and who need assistance in dealing with the normal
difficulties of life.
Some of my clients are receiving medical treatment for cancer, or facing
surgery. Others have cardiovascular problems, or going through a difficult
menopause. About half of my clients are in generally good health but
have reached a turning point in their lives where they have made a commitment
to live in a healthier manner.
Whichever situation you find yourself in, I bring to the table many
tools to help you. I will counsel you about ways to cope with stress,
and teach you simple techniques to use in your daily life. I may use
guided imagery (visualization); drawing (stick figures are fine!); journaling;
sound; music; and many other approaches to help you to define and then
move towards the life you wish to be living. Basically, I use techniques
that bring into play both sides of the brain: the left side rational,
logical, linear thinking; and the right side intuitive, creative,
and imaginative. By doing so, you will find your ability to succeed
much higher.
